Frequently Asked Question

What clothing is suitable for me to wear on my expedition?

Last Updated 7 days ago

Choosing the right clothing is important to keep you comfortable, dry and protected throughout your expedition.

Both DofE Head Office and JLGB recommend wearing walking trousers or synthetic tracksuit bottoms. You should avoid clothing that is made mostly from cotton, including:

  • Jeans
  • Chinos
  • Cotton tracksuit bottoms

Cotton absorbs sweat and moisture and takes a long time to dry, which can make you uncomfortable during a long day of walking. Synthetic or technical fabrics are much more suitable as they help move moisture away from your skin and dry more quickly.

You must wear trousers on your expedition. Shorts are not suitable as they do not provide enough protection from thorns, stinging nettles and other vegetation you may encounter while walking.

For your top, we recommend lightweight, synthetic or technical T-shirts that are comfortable and breathable. A lightweight fleece is also a good option as it provides warmth without taking up too much space in your rucksack.
